Kurdistan - The Castle /

In the northern part of Iraq's Kurdish autonomous region is the town of Akre. Here a former prison was once used by Saddam Hussein's regime to hold Iranian prisoners of war and political dissidents. Now converted into a shelter, known as the Castle, it holds more than 1,000 Syrian refugees. A stronghold of Islamic State militants in Iraq is less than 50 kilometres away.
